Progression at Shisenkan Nanzan Dojo
Grading Systems. Shisenkan Nanzan Dojo uses two grading systems, the modern and traditional Japanese grading systems. The modern Japanese grading system with 9 Kyu (級 - junior) ranks and 8 Dan (段 - senior) ranks is used for progression in unarmed martial arts skills. The traditional Japanese grading system is used for weapons training with Kirigami "Initiation" level continuing to Shoden "Beginning Level", Chūden "Middle Level", Okuden "High Level", and Goku'i "Mastership Level". These grading systems are the same for Kids 10-12, Teens 13-17 and Adult 18+, however the kids have a modified children’s syllabus and then transition to the regular syllabus from 13 years of age.
Testing or Grading. Progression is observed in training regularly, and teaching is adjusted to each deshi (student). When the student has reached the required skill level for a rank, a formal test is conducted by the instructor in front of the other deshi. Upon successful completion of the test, the deshi will receive an official certificate, an updated record and membership card.
Belt Colours. Teens 13-17 and Adults 18+ wear green belts for kyu ranks and black belt for dan ranks. The Kids 10-12 have their progression recognised using a coloured belt system.
